Just-Right Editing
not too little
not too much
Goldilocks represents the space between extremes — the balance between being ruthlessly picked apart and being too delicate and therefore underdeveloped. Where care and craft meet to strengthen your story, not turn it into something your story was never meant to be.
My Values Keep Your Aspirations Top of Mind
AUTHENTICITY
Honoring the emotional truth that gives your story its voice, preserving what makes it yours while bringing clarity and intention to the page.
CONNECTION
Building the bridge between where your story is now and where it needs to be will connect your words to your readers. That connection will help your story land the way you dream it will.
CARE
Balancing honoring the heart of your story with technical mastery, where your story is strengthened with precision, without losing the vision that brought it here today.
GROWTH
Helping your story become more fully itself, so it can evolve, gain momentum, and reach the readers, agents, or publishers you’re aiming for.
Good editing should never come at the expense of a writer’s voice
Every story has a heart — an emotional truth it is trying to reach. Editing should hold that heart with care, honoring what the story is becoming rather than forcing it into something else. The role of an editor is not to overwrite, rush, or harden a piece in the name of improvement, but to listen closely enough to protect what makes it yours.
Writing is a vulnerable act. When you hand your work to someone else, you’re not asking for harsh correction — you’re trusting them with something deeply personal. That trust deserves to be met with warmth, attention, and care. Just-right editing is an act of advocacy — for the writer’s intent and for the reader’s experience. It brings clarity without harshness, guidance without control, and support without diminishing your writer’s voice.
When editing is done with intention, a story doesn’t become something else. It becomes clearer, stronger, and truer to what it has always been. Done well, editing doesn’t distort a story. It reveals it.
Meet
Tera
As both a writer and editor, I understand how to help you create the story you want to tell. I will treat your creative products with care and compassion while inspiring you to achieve your best work. Like Goldilocks, I provide editing that is just right to serve your written work. Feedback that feels both meaningful and accessible to you. Support that is just right for your manuscript. I am an advocate for you in creating a work product that you can feel proud of and that readers will appreciate.
I also help authors just write. I can help you create the structure you need to accomplish your writing goals. I know how hard it can be to find the time and create the headspace for completing your writing projects. With a combination of structure and inspiration, I will help you write on.
By default, I use the Chicago Manual of Style as guidance, but I will also leverage other editorial guides like the Conscious Style Guide. I will be happy to discuss working with a specific style guide of your choice if that will best serve your project.
I graduated with a B.A. in English from the University of Washington, earned a J.D., then worked in the world as a lawyer, a nonprofit executive director, a homeschooling parent and educator, an avid volunteer, and a freelance writer before earning a certificate in Creative Writing and a second certificate in Editing, as well as a Developmental Editing Specialization, all through the University of Washington Professional Certificate Programs.

Don’t Just Take My Word For It
“Tera is truly the whole package! I’m so grateful to have had an editor who is not only constructive and attentive to the details, but who is also incredibly supportive! She communicates clearly, listens, and understands your vision as a writer and creator, and is a wealth of information! I will absolutely come to Tera again for my future editing needs and will continue pointing fellow writers her way!”

“My experience with Tera was my first time working with an editor, and I could not be more pleased with the results! Each of our meetings was incredibly thorough and clearly came from a place of passion for my project and helping to deliver the best version of it possible fueled by her expansive knowledge of storytelling. Tera gave advice and criticism of the piece that were in line with the goals we set, and she helped me think about the story in new and creative ways. Even the ideas she pitched that we didn’t go with still helped me consider the story from angles I hadn’t before. And the multi-page breakdown she gave me, including a reverse outline table, gave me an incredibly detailed view of my story and helped me visualize the spots where it was currently lacking. Working solo on my projects, stories like the one I worked on with Tera might take me eight or ten iterations to figure out the full story. But with Tera’s editorial work, I feel more confident writing the second draft now that she’s helped give me a clear sight on how to finalize it.”

Your Work Deserves the Human Touch
I care deeply about your story, and will personally help you move it into its final form.
AI-FREE EDITING
Every story carries intention — shaped by experience, emotion, and meaning. Editing that work requires more than pattern recognition; it requires discernment. I think carefully about your intended audience — their expectations, their curiosity, and what will help your story resonate. I engage with your writing as a thoughtful reader first, honoring the nuance, tone, and layered complexity that give language its depth. My role is to ensure your message is clear and accessible without flattening what makes it distinctive, using judgment to find that just-right balance between refinement and protection.
Editing is inherently collaborative. It begins with understanding what you are trying to say and ensuring that what you intend is exactly what your readers experience on the page. Together, we shape your manuscript into its strongest, most fully realized form — guided not by automation, but by care, conversation, and a shared commitment to the heart of your story.
